冬蟲夏草的故事
北魏時期，西藏土番國長期為患中國，而履吃敗仗的中國軍隊，為了反敗為勝，特地派人馬駐紮西藏當地。但歷經20餘年的環境適應，仍然照吃敗仗，令中國軍隊百思不得其解。在長期的觀察中，他們發現土番國在春天時，會將馬匹放在高原上吃一種極特別的黑色蟲草，使得土番國的馬匹長得高大壯碩、跑得飛快。
直到70年代，科學家才研究出「冬蟲夏草」原來是一種蕈類，且只生長在西藏高原的獨特環境下。當地有一種七年生的蟲子－蝙蝠蛾蟲，當此蟲長到五歲時，其頭上會分泌特殊的酵素，將孢子溶解菌絲體釋出並侵入蟲體，以吸取蟲子內的養份，直至蟲子死亡為止。這種在冬天時是蟲，夏天時蟲體僵死身上長出褐黑色像草一樣的菌體，被稱之為「冬蟲夏草」。
專屬加工製程
從1972年開始，權威的中國大陸醫學科學院藥物研究所花費10年功夫，收集和分析全國各地的蟲草標本。因為蟲草稀少，非常難以收集，他們的目的就是要發掘一種優良的菌種，來生產菌絲體以供應日益增加的需要。
世上的冬蟲夏草有數百種，其中的Cs-4蟲草菌株是從其他200種蟲草菌株中篩選出來的最佳菌株，也是PX的專利。這種被選菌株符合嚴格的安全標準，能夠生長在各種培養液中，生長迅速，不易被污染。Cs-4菌株發現於海拔12,400英尺的青海省和龍縣，這個地區傳統上以盛產蟲草而聞名近千年。1987 年，中國大陸衛生部批準了Cs-4的臨床應用。此後這項研究獲得國家獎，是中國大陸應用更新、更嚴格的西方科學方法來評價草本植物後，第一件官方批准的產品。
在中國發酵蟲草Cs-4，已用化學和科學方法進行了廣泛的研究。蟲草Cs -4更類似野生蟲草，不論它是在低溫下進行發酵的階段，從生長到成熟時期的外觀，所含化學成份，以及做為營養補充品的效益和作用等層面，都和野生的冬蟲夏草最為類似，在某些方面，蟲草Cs-4比野生型更佳。
1995年蟲草Cs-4獲得中國大陸政府智慧財產權保護。Pharmanex是唯一取得中國大陸以外的使用許可證。
